Updates on mine and Rhys's progress in the hospital as Thomas and I bide our time- waiting until Rhys decides it's time to come! Following my rupture, we were told I may lose the baby, or, at best, he would be born premature. We are praying for a miracle- so far we have already beaten the odds. (A detailed explanation of our story is posted at the bottom of the page.)

Peanut at 24 weeks- he always covers his face

I think we chose the perfect name...

Long before we knew what we were having, Thomas and I decided on a boy's name- funny, but we never did decide on a name for a girl.

Our little Peanut (so called because of the 6 week US pic in which he looks like a peanut) will be called Rhys, his full name being Thomas Rhys Chafin.

At the time, we had no idea if what troubles were to come, but I think his name suits him perfectly: Rhys is Welsh, meaning 'enthusiasm for life.'

Our story

I am labeled a pPROM-er (Preterm Premature Rupture of Membrane). This is not something I was familiar with prior to my own experience, and it varies greatly from patient-to-patient. Our experience is below.

My sac ruptured on October 14. I spent 5 nights at SGMC before I was temporarily discharged for bed rest at home. As I was only 22 weeks pregnant, my pregnancy was not considered "viable" by many facilities. Dr. Taylor and I discussed several transfers, but decided I would go down to Orlando, where I have my sister for support. The next week, after 7 days of at-home antibiotics, I came down to Winnie Palmer, a Level 3 NICU hospital in Orlando, FL. We are here for the long haul. If I am able to make it to 34 weeks (Jan 12) without going into labor, infection, etc, then they will induce me at that point. Otherwise, I'll be a patient until I deliver, at which point our Peanut will be the patient.

I only had 2cm of fluid left, initially, following the rupture, but now my level is actually a little lower. I never started contractions and my cervix didn't dilate. I hope this is a good sign. Peanut's heartrate has stayed fairly steady, usually in the 145-155 range, and he has been kicking up a storm. It seems he is not to upset about anything!
I spent most of the first 3 days crying, but am trying to stay encouraged by the little things. We were told, immediately following the rupture, that I would possibly lose the baby, but that, if not, he would be born premature. We've hit our first 2 'big' weeks (24 and 28), so at least he is in better odds at this point. I'll have a US every other Wednesday to determine his growth- so far he has been measuring 2 weeks ahead! I've told Peanut he has to be 5 lbs when he comes out, so he still has some work to do in there. After visiting the NICU here at Winnie, I feel very encouraged about the care he will receive after birth. However, we are still praying that my sac will re-sealed and my fluid will replenish to a healthy level.
